Page set-up - Can you lock cells?

Hey- I created an order form with all of the prices calculating to a final price and everything seems to work fine, but I would like to make it so the names of the products and there prices not be able to be edited. I want to make the sheet to where the only places that can be filled in are the amounts and the customer’s information. Is this possible? It seems that when one of our secretaries is on the phone with a customer, they might make a mistake and start to fill in the wrong boxes (cells) while they're on the phone and have to pause to fix the error they created and then continue. I want to make one to where all they need to do is fill in the customer’s information and then the amounts of each product they order. Can this be done with Excel or do I have to take part of my Excel file and combine it with another?

Thank You,
Sean McDonough

Re: Page set-up - Can you lock cells?

Yes, its possible.

1. Select the cells which you want to be unlocked ( in this case, cells related to "amounts and the customer’s information")

2. From Menu Bar, select
Format > Cells... > Protection Tab

3. Uncheck (click to remove the tick mark) "Locked" checkbox and click "OK"

4. From Menu Bar, select
Tools > Protection > Protect Sheet...

5. Type in a password (and remember it since there is no way to retrieve in case you forget)

6. Re-Type the password as shall be prompted by Excel after pressing OK

7. Your Excel file is protected now, and one can only input in the unlocked cells, as desired.

[N.B. You can refine your protection criteria by playing through he options you get at step 5]
