If one is using office 2003 then Office compatiblity pack not required.

I assumed Office 2007 was in use.

"Which MS Office are u using Office 2003 or office 2007 and are you trying to import ur spreadsheet in Microsoft Works(Which you are saying as Vista Spreadsheet) or something else

you need to install a compatabiltiy pack to get office 2007 documents to be opened in office 2003
