Windows VISTA Facts, Bugs and Goof-ups
Modified By Vishal Gupta on 1/6/2008 11:25:54 PM)

Guys!

As u all know Vista is out and I'm using it since many months.
So in this period I hv found lots of interesting things, a few of them can be called goof-ups. So in this thread I'll post about such interesting facts.

All bugs have been taken from here:

Bugs & Goof-ups

1. If u press <SHIFT> key and right-click on a folder, u'll get "Open Command Window here" and "Copy as Path" options.

2. U can enable "Checkboxes" to select items using "Folder Options". It helps in selecting multiple items.

3. Windows DreamScene doesnt work, if "Show Translucent selection rectangle" option is disabled from System Properties (Performance Settings).

4. DreamScene stops running, when we maximize the active window.

5. When u change something from Performance Settings in System Properties, the Aero theme is automatically changed to Vista Basic theme.

6. If u press and hold <CTRL> key and then scroll with ur mouse backward/forward on desktop, then the desktop icon size will increase/decrease.

7. If u press and hold <CTRL> key while pressing <ALT> + TAB or <WIN> + TAB, then it'll not disappear after leaving the keys. It'll remain there on screen and u can easily navigate thru the windows.

8. Open "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and goto "Notification Area" tab. Now look carefully at the image and u'll find that the sidebar icon is still from Vista BETA releases and they forgot to update the image in RTM.

9. A new interesting feature in Vista is "Taskbar Thumbnails", which shows the opened windows previews when we move the cursor in taskbar. Yeah it works perfectly but I found that if we minimize/maximize a window by clicking on the taskbar and keep the cursor on it, then it doesnt show the thumbnail preview, it just shows the simple tool-tip.

10. One more thing I noticed, If a window is minimized, then its taskbar thumbnail doesnt show the live preview instead it shows a static preview. Same thing happens in case of <WIN>+Tab or <ALT>+Tab. It also shows a static preview of the window. And if the window is maximized, then u can see a live preview.

11. You can disable the startup sound (when Animated ORB is shown before login screen) from "Sound" applet in Control Panel.

12. There is a HIDDEN boot screen in Vista. Just enable "No GUI Boot" option in "Boot" of "msconfig".

13. By default Power button in Startmenu is not set to "Shutdown" in Vista. But u can change it using "Power Settings" applet in Control Panel.

14. Its related to the HIDDEN files. If a file/folder is HIDDEN under another folder/drive and we press <CTRL>+A or Select All, then Vista doesnt show any message saying "This folder contains hidden files. To select all files enable "Show hidden files" option from Tools -> Folder Options" and even if we enable "Status bar" in explorer. It doesnt show "x hidden files" in status bar.
In XP status bar used to show no. of all files including hidden files and also explorer gives message when we try to select all files.
So Its a BUG IMO. I submitted this BUG to Microsoft.

So guys, just share any goof-up/interesting fact u found in Vista.

Nice Vishal .
Also compare the clearing the "My recent documents" list  from Start menu with Winows XP.
How easy and friendly designed it is in Vista.
How many clicks reduced ?

Re: DID YOU KNOW? Windows VISTA Facts & Goof-ups

Nice observations , vishal.

Yes, in Vista , to clear 'recent items list', just right click on it and clear.

Also for your point no7, there's 'switch between windows' in the quick launch toolbar, so that can also be used. Yes that's a good tip to use ctrl key with alt+tab, but some may find it inconvenient the key combination, so this shortcut on quick launch toolbar is there. And instead of clicking, one can also use win key+the numeric postion.Moving from left to right they are numbered from 1. So if its in 3 rd postion , it'll be Winkey+3 and so on.You can assign 10 such shortcuts there. Last one will be Win+0

Also one will find that there's no menu bar in explorer. So to get that, just press Alt. Its a toggle key to make it show and hide in Windows Explorer. If one wants it to be always displayed , then click on Organise->Layout->check menubar.

Also one more thing ,  Winkey+spacebar will bring sidebar to front. (if your sidebar is not always on top)

Also as you said to open command windows here in your point 1 is also very handy.
