As u all know Vista is out and I'm using it since many months.

Also compare the clearing the "My recent documents" list from Start menu with Winows XP.
How easy and friendly designed it is in Vista.

Yes, in Vista , to clear 'recent items list', just right click on it and clear.
Also for your point no7, there's 'switch between windows' in the quick launch toolbar, so that can also be used. Yes that's a good tip to use ctrl key with alt+tab, but some may find it inconvenient the key combination, so this shortcut on quick launch toolbar is there. And instead of clicking, one can also use win key+the numeric postion.Moving from left to right they are numbered from 1. So if its in 3 rd postion , it'll be Winkey+3 and so on.You can assign 10 such shortcuts there. Last one will be Win+0
Also one will find that there's no menu bar in explorer. So to get that, just press Alt. Its a toggle key to make it show and hide in Windows Explorer. If one wants it to be always displayed , then click on Organise->Layout->check menubar.
Also one more thing , Winkey+spacebar will bring sidebar to front. (if your sidebar is not always on top)
Also as you said to open command windows here in your point 1 is also very handy.

One more thing, when u press <SHIFT> key and right-click on folders, u also get another option "Copy as Path", which is very useful in copying the full path of that folder.

Hi guys
Today I found another BUG in Vista.
1. Enable "Statusbar" by pressing <ALT> key and goto "View -> Statusbar".
2. Now open any folder containing images.
3. Select any image file and see its size in statusbar.
4. Now refresh the folder by pressing <F5> key and again select that file. Now see its size again in Statusbar. U'll be surprised by seeing its size. It'll be doubled. Again Refresh and again check the size in statusbar. It'll be again doubled. and so on......
So if u select a file and see its size in statusbar, suppose it is 1 MB, then after refreshing the folder and again selecting the file will show its size as 2 MB in statusbar and so on..... If u select a different file after refreshing the folder, then it'll add the new file size in previous file size and will show the sum in status bar.
Its happening for me as well as another computer of my friend. Pls check whether it happens for u too?

lol. Now I found that its not only happening for folders containing images but also any other folder. Open any folder and try the trick, it'll work.

ANOTHER BUG...
1. Goto "Organize -> Folder & Search Options".
2. In "View" tab, enable "Show hidden files and folders" option and disable "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" option.
3. Now check the Desktop, u'll get 2 "desktop.ini" files on desktop.
Now first thing wth there are 2 desktop.ini files? I came to know that 1 file is for current user and 1 for all users profile.
Ok, but why these files are shown on desktop after enabling/disabling above mentioned options?
In earlier versions of windows (like XP) no such file was shown on desktop even the file exists in desktop folder, but it was not used to show on desktop. It was a good feature.
But in Vista, it looks so annoying. Many users like me enable "show hidden files/folders" option and disable the option "hide protected system files". But if we do so, then desktop starts showing those 2 ugly files. I want a clean desktop, as clean as possible. So its too annoying...
And if u delete the files, they'll re appear after restart.
So its definitely another BUG in Vista...

No vishal, its not a bug, desktop.ini are required but as you changed those options
, it was viewed there on desktop.
This can be changed through
registry:
goto
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advance
in
that there's ShowSuperHidden is there, its value will be 1 , so make it 0
And
you will not see those desktop.ini on your desktop.
So there's a thing in
Vista as Superhidden files !!

Actually this 'Superhidden' was present in XP also, but its value used to be
0,
But in Vista its changed to 1 when those settings were changed.

lol. U didn’t get what I was trying to say.
1. "SuperHidden" is not any new thing. It was also there in XP, as u
said.
2. "SuperHidden" is not any secret DWORD value. Its for "Hide Protected
system files" option in "Folder Options".
3. U can check it. If u enable this option in folder options, then
"SuperHidden" will be changed to 0 and if u disable it, then "SuperHidden" will
be changed to 1.
So at last the things is same. When we do both things:
1. Enable "show hidden files"
2. disable "hide protected system files"
The "desktop.ini" files will be shown on desktop, which shouldn’t be
shown.
They are there for some purpose and a user might delete them by mistake or
by intention. So they must be invisible from users, like it used to in earlier
versions of windows.

Agreed vishal,  What I suggested about tweaking 'Superhidden' through registry was already
done by you from the option in Folder option, so those ini files appeared on
desktop.
As you said ,it’s the same thing doing in different way. But this desktop.ini is shown on desktop , as you said when you enable 'show hidden files" AND disable "hide protecting system files". But if you want the hidden files to be shown but desktop.ini not to be shown on desktop, then check "hide protecting system files". So this can be done but you want both conditions.  |

Hi guys I'm back again with another interesting find in Vista.
Its not a BUG but a thing, which shouldnt happen:
1. I always disable "Folder Options" in my windows, so that no one can change the options and no one can enable "show hidden files/folders" option. You can disable it either using "gpedit.msc" or using Registry Editor. Open regedit and goto:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Now in right-side pane, create a new DWORD value NoFolderOptions and set its value 1. It'll disable "Folder options".
2. But in Vista "Folder Options" and "Search Options" have been combined in a single option "Folder & Search Options". So if we disable "Folder Options" using registry editor or gpedit.msc in Vista. It doesnt disable "Folder options" completely. I found that we can still access them by using following method:
Open "Search" and click on "Advanced Search" button. Now search for anything by typing something in Name, Tags or authors text boxes. After doing this, u'll get another toolbar under these options. Now click on "Search Tools -> Search Options" and whats that? U'll have full access to "Folder options". Every tab will be visible.
So whats the use of disabling "Folder Options"? IMO, Search Options should only show "Search" tab and not all tabs.

OK guys!
I'm back with 2 more BUGs in Vista. FIRST BUG:
==========
Its related to moving a folder "A" into another folder "B", if "B" contains
another folder with same name "A".
Steps:
======
1. Create a folder with any name in any location. Suppose we created a
folder with name "vishal" in D:\ drive.
2. Create a file in this folder.
Suppose we created a text file "v.txt" under "vishal" folder.
3. Now create
another folder in any location. Suppose we created another folder "gupta" in D:\
drive.
4. Now create a folder (with same name of the first folder we created
in Step1) in this new folder "gupta". i.e., create a folder with the name
"vishal" in "gupta" folder.
5. Now create a new text file with same name
"v.txt" in this newly created "vishal" folder.
To clear all steps, following is a hierarchy of both folders:
D:\vishal\v.txt
D:\gupta\vishal\v.txt
Now lets start the BUG:
Try to move the folder "D:\vishal" into "D:\gupta". It'll ask you whether
you want to merge the folder or not? Click on "Yes" button.
Now it'll find
that both folders contain similar files, so it'll give u following
options:
A. Move and Replace the files.
B. Don't move files.
C. Move
but keep both files.
Now either select A or select C.
Now come back to D:\ drive and u'll see that it still contains the "vishal"
folder although we have moved it to "gupta" folder.
For me it seems a BUG, what u guys say?

I found that it also happens when you are moving a folder containing system files (like thumbs.db, etc.). It'll ask whether you want to move system file or not and when you'll select yes, it'll move the file but will keep an instance of the folder at source.

SECOND BUG:
=============
If we try to delete a file/folder, windows asks our permission "Are
you sure you want to move the file to recycle bin?"
If we try to
<SHIFT>+Delete the file, it still asks "Are you
sure you want to permanently delete this file?"
Now right-click on Recycle Bin icon on desktop and select
"Properties". Now de-select the option "Display delete
confirmation dialog" and apply it.
Now try again to simple delete (moving to recycle Bin) &
<SHIFT>+Delete a file/folder. You'll not get any prompt while moving to
recycle bin but u'll get a prompt again when you'll try to <SHIFT>+Delete
the file/folder. Thats OK. Its used to happen in earlier versions of windows. So
whats the BUG?
Now the BUG starts:
Attach any Removable drive (Pen drive, USB HDD, etc.) and try to delete
(moving to recycle bin) and <SHIFT>+Delete a file/folder.
You'll be
surprised because it'll not prompt you in any situation.
So if windows prompts you while <SHIFT>+Delete a file/folder
in non-removable drives, then why it doesnt prompt you the same in removable
drives?
Either it should prompt in both or it should not.

OK guys
One more Goof-up in Vista, which I found today while renaming a folder in Favorite Links area.
STEPS:
======
1. Open RUN dialog box.
2. Click on " Browse" button.
3. Now right-click on any folder in " Favorite Links" area in left side of box and select " Rename" and see the BUG.
As you can see in screenshot, as soon as we select " Rename"
option, the dialog box starts looking horrible. The REFRESH, SEARCH and
the Little DOWN arrow don't look decent. They look like 256 color
images. The text color in addressbar become so light that its too hard
to read it. Also the text in "Favorite Links" area become non-smooth.
So its definitely a BUG.
PS: You can try it with any other software. You have to just use
an "Open, Save or Browse" dialog box to check this BUG. You can use
Notepad and click on Save, Save as, New or Open options.

I'm back with 2 more BUGs:
FIRST BUG:
==========
1. Open any drive and select a file/folder.
2. Now minimize the window.
3. Maximize it and try to cut/copy/delete the selected file/folder using keyboard and not mouse (i.e. use <CTRL>+X, <CTRL>+C, <CTRL>+V and <DELETE> keys). It'll do nothing even you can see clearly that the file/folder is still selected.
So you'll hv to again select the already selected file/folder to perform any operation.
It didnt happen in earlier versions of windows.
SECOND BUG:
===========
I don't know the exact situation, when this happens but I have faced
this problem many times in Vista. Sometimes when we don't have proper
permissions on a folder and we try to delete it. Vista give ERROR
message like you don't have permissions or something like that. But if
we want to <SHIFT>+Delete the same folder, we don't get any ERROR message although it doesnt get deleted.
For recreating it, I found one interesting method:
1. Open Command Prompt and give following command:
md \\.\c:\con
It'll create a folder " con" in C:\ drive. Actually this folder
can't be created normally using New -> Folder. Con stands for
Console and its in use since good old DOS days. But using above trick
we can create it in windows.
2. Now open C:\ drive and try to delete it. Windows will give error:
" Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C:\. Verify the item's location and try again."
OK. cool. and now try to <SHIFT>+Delete it. Amazing,
you'll get no error and you'll think that you have successfully deleted
it. But just refresh the window and you'll find that its still there.
I have faced this problem most of the times, when I copied a movie DVD
in my computer and then tried to delete the folder. Not always but most
of the times.
So IMO, the error message should be given in both situations.

Guys Another BUG here: 1. Right-click on Taskbar and select " Properties". 2. Goto " Start Menu" tab and select " Classic Start menu". 3. Click on " Customize" button and make sure " Display Log off" option is checked. Now apply it. After all this, click on Start button and select "Log off". And whats that? It didnt ask you "Are you sure or not?" In earlier versions of windows, it used to confirm the action, whenever we click on "Log off". It was quite useful coz lots of time we clicked on "Log off" by mistake and if it asks for confirmation, then we can simply click on "No" button. But in Vista, it doesnt ask for confirmation and if u clicked on it by mistake then u'll loose all ur opened documents (if not saved), u'll loose all ur websites opened, etc. Today I changed my startmenu to Classic in vista and was checking options in startmenu and I clicked on "Log off" button to check what message it shows? But for my wonder it didnt ask anything and logged off me from windows and I lost all the sites, that were opened in the browser. Its not good. What u say guys? pls post your opinions...
