Hi,
I have Windows Vista Home Basic, and whenever I update the product, the ugrades get installed in C: drive. However my C:(50 GB) drive now only has about 10GB of space remaining with system recovery files, and 17.5 GB without system recovery files, temporary files, etc. I want to change the drive of updates as I have other drives with sufficient amount of space (120 GB) without re-installation of OS.

Dear Gurus,

Is this so a difficult query that I got no reply to it even after 9 days?

Days doesn't matters Look Updates goes to Windows\Software Distribution Folder which is not a user customizable folder so I fear you can't but you can though move its content to another folder this will free up the space for the next download of update.

I don't think their is any method to install the updates in other drive, though you could always increase the space of your primary drive using Disk Management.

Accepted Answer

Windows Update Cache is stored into C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder that can be trashed by disabling Windows Update service but not the location. FYI Windows Updates replace System files with Updated binaries and their location can't be changed.

If you want to place system folder like Users, Program Files, Windows in different drives, you need to re-deploy Windows Vista (install.wim) image with Answer file (unattended.xml).

Unlike in XP, in Vista & 7, only the concerned system files are replaced. So I suggest that you use a freeware partition manager and try to increase the size instead.
