OEM, A threat to MS?

I want to discuss something openly. I saw in few websites that are listing the download links for the OEM versions of Office 2007.

They are called as Microsoft Office 2007 Blue Edition. (This name is given by Pirates and not by Microsoft)

I want to ask that, is it safe for Microsoft to release such versions(OEMs)? Why don't developers keep this small thing in mind that these kind of versions can lead to maximum piracy without any trace?

Not only Office, but even XP and other products too. It won't take much time to share that OEM disc with someone and install the 100% legal XP which in reality isn't genuine at all. I know that some manufacturers use their own kind-of drivers which when installed in other computers won't work because they aren't meant to be run in other systems. But, Dell, for example, does supply OEM based XP.

I hope its safe to discuss these things. And also please guide me if I am going wrong.

Yep. Its safe to discuss such things. But afaik, OEM versions works on only one system. So if someone shares his OEM version with someone else then it'll become non-genuine. correct me if I'm wrong?

OEM versions are given to PC assembling companies like - hp; dell; acer etc and are meant to be installed on their particular machines many manufacturers upon requests do provide their customers with the OEM build cds for re-installation in case of format or repairing the system if something goes wrong like repairing the hdd; boot sequence etc.

the piracy is not due to OEM version coz OEM versions also require serial nos. and can be installed only on systems that they were bundled with :) so OEM versions arent the versions that coz the problem as even if u get an OEM version u cant install it on any system and expect it to work u will still need a patch or a crack :)

@Vishal Sharing will ofcourse be non-genuine. I didn't deny this fact. But, sharing does solve one's purpose of having a version of XP right? The OEMs which you and me are talking about those versions which are compatible with ANY computer (not like particular hardware based). And an off-topic doubt I had :- I have one 100% legal version of XP registered and activated at my name which is running on one of the laptop. If I have to format it someday, then what will happen to my registration and activation on their database? I am a legal customer, and I feel that I should be given the privelege to use it again. Please throw some light on this also.

@mav3 To an extent I agree to you. But, taking a real example, I saw one CD from Dell at my cousin's place which is Windows XP Professional with SP2 which doesn't ask for key. I have seen him installing with it. And according your saying, check my off-topic doubt.

u will need to re-register and activate ur product either online or by calling MS if u do a fresh re-install - u need to extract ur key use jellybean key finder and install with it and then go online and re-activate ur version; if u find any porblem in re-activating ur windows call MS and they will guide u

and i doubt that OEMs will install on any random machine - u might not need to enter a serial no. but u will definitely need to activate ur copy
