Vista has received a less than lukewarm reception by the masses. One would think that Intel would adopt Microsoft’s latest operating system for its own operations. This has not happened and is likely to never happen.
In public appearances, Intel is a strong supporter of Microsoft but that’s just a show for the audience. It would seem that behind the scenes, Intel has no love for Vista and maybe less love for Microsoft as a whole.
The Inquirer reports that there is a memo circulating around Intel that it will never deploy Vista, ever. When the largest manufacturer of processors says it isn’t going to deploy Vista then clearly something is very wrong with the product.
The company’s official answer about potential future upgrades is that it will “likely adopt” Windows 7. However, there are other options open to the company for “upgrades.”
As it is pointed out in the article, Apple is loyal to Intel and Intel could certainly deploy Mac OSX on a wide basis with few problems. This may seem unlikely but given the dissatisfaction with Vista it should not be discounted as a possibility.
Intel has basically told Microsoft that it can keep Vista and that other options will be considered. It doesn’t look like Windows 7 will be a great option for the company either. If not Mac OSX, it’s very likely that some distro of Linux will be used.
Perhaps this time Microsoft has learned a lesson. Vista may be an “okay” operating system but it’s not perceived as such. Most see it as junk or little more than Windows ME II. If the company has any sense about it, it will continue to offer Windows XP after the “cut-off” date.
The only question in my mind is how will Redmond respond to this? But then again, it may not respond at all.
