It seems that UAC is a slapped in feature in Vista as the UI is also disturbing when starting the confirmation windows.

I don't think so... It doesn't distrub Vista UI (AERO) instaead of switching to Secure Desktop...you can disable this.

Type secpol.msc in Run or start search

Navigate to Security Settings >> Local Policies >> Security Options

and look @ bottom for User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation

and Disable it.

it's my Windows

Well Ramesh, doesn't disabling the UAC on Secure desktop reduces the security a bit? At times, i find it annoying to have so many prompts, but i know very well, that they are the reason i am running my Vista installation since 6 months without any slowdown, even when i try out so many tweaks and install uninstall softwares a lot. Its just great! Its a pain in the you know what :-) to reinstall windows, reconfigure and retweak it, install huge developer tools like visual studio 2008 again and what not. Vista has reduced the reinstall cycle to a minimum, for me atleast. Also i have absolutely no fear of inserting a pen drive into my laptop :-)

Its just that developers should try to learn good programming practices which they have been ignorant about due to the insecure by design kind of design of previous windows versions. Least privilege access methodology as Mark Russinovich talked about in one of his springboard videos is the best and the most secure way to write programs. And Vista has done a great job in implementing that kind tight security in the OS so that developers are now forced to provide good quality applications to their users, applications which are secure by design. For that Microsoft has taken very brave steps, since they must be knowing in advance about all this bashing they are getting from certain users of their os. But yet they did what was right. I hope with security in place, Windows 7 will take performance of this marvel of a technology to greater hights. My good wishes are with all the folks at MS. :-)

Re: Has Windows Vista’s UAC feature failed Microsoft?

UAC is a method which separates privileges and tasks of a standard user from those that requires access of administrator. While running as a standard account this increases user experience and results in increased security. Now users can flexibly run more tasks, enjoy higher application compatibility without being logged as an administrator which in turn reduces malware affection, unauthorized installation of software, and unapproved changes in system.

So you and all can think of this feature whether it gains popularity or looses. This feature adds some security to Windows Vista and I don't think so that increased security will fail MS.
