Has Windows Vista’s UAC feature failed Microsoft?

Experts agree that Microsoft’s Windows Vista is relatively well-protected, but its security features — such as User Account Control (UAC) — have been highlighted by security experts as one reason why the operating system is far less popular than its predecessor, Windows XP.
According to Scott Charney, vice president of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing Group, UAC was designed to give users more control over the applications they run and help them make better security decisions by providing them with more information. However, the main problem with Vista’s UAC, according to Charney, is that it prompts the user far too often.
"Clearly there has to be work done on UAC user prompts, where users get prompts at times they don’t necessarily expect it — and it’s not intuitive. The challenge is — as with many of these things when we try to give users control — if you give people too many prompts in too many situations, they view it as an impediment," Charney told ZDNet.com.au yesterday at the AusCERT security conference on the Gold Coast.

Re: Has Windows Vista’s UAC feature failed Microsoft?

the UAC is a boon to windows users, though initially it was a pain coming up all the time, even software developers at that time did not understand the wrking of the UAC, now it has improved alot and based on my perosnal experience of my idiot friends their asses have been saved a lot of times courtesy the UAC, something is better than nothing ;)

Re: Has Windows Vista’s UAC feature failed Microsoft?

Yes ! It is, UAC blocks 60% viruses and malicios or harmful script to run.

its totally practical experience ... anyone can check itself ...   just plug a Virus infected Removable Flash drive in Windows XP and Windows Vista ...and see better luck next time for Windows XP users...

Windows Vista's UAC rocks

Re: Has Windows Vista’s UAC feature failed Microsoft?

Yeah! I agree to the fact that UAC did a fantastic job to keep most malicious scripts and viruses at the bay. But the implementation of UAC in Vista is sometimes too annoying. I do not like the way in which UAC is implemented in Vista. It seems that UAC is a slapped in feature in Vista as the UI is also disturbing when starting the confirmation windows.

Features with almost same functionalities were already present in the UNIX based systems. What MS did with UAC is to adding a very long awaited useful feature in Windows at last, but it needs some serious improvements with functionality and the way it warns the users.
