Vista Compatible PC 
Can you suggest what configutaion my PC should have to run Vista on it.

It'll depend what ver. of Vista you want to run.
So if you want to utilise all the features provided by Vista Ultimate, then its system requirement will be different from running the Vista Home basic.
check this for sytem requirement.
You can also use Vista upgrade advisor to check if you PC can run Vista or not?

"The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor will help you to determine if your Windows XP-based PC can run Windows Vista. You can also use the Upgrade Advisor to determine if your Windows Vista-based PC is ready for an upgrade to a more powerful edition of Windows Vista."

I would like to suggest the following configuration-
Intel Core 2 Duo processor E6700 (2.66GHz)
 Intel D965WH motherboard
A 512 MB graphics card maybe of NVIDIA or GFORCE
A 2GB DDR2-533MHz SDRAM
160 GB SATA 2 Harddisc may be of Seagate or Samsung
A DVD writer of Sony or Samsung
rest you can have anything
