The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism State of the News Media report shows that most news sectors lost revenue this past year, including network television, local TV, magazines, though newspapers were the most severely affected.

“In sum, the news industry is not much closer to a new revenue model than a year earlier and has lost more ground to rivals in the technology industry. But growing evidence also suggests that news is becoming a more important and pervasive part of people’s lives. That, in the end, could prove a
saving factor for the future of journalism,” The New York Times reported the PEJ report as saying.

The PEJ report says that 27 percent of Americans are receiving their news of mobile devices. “And these mobile news consumers are even more likely to turn to news organizations directly, through apps and home pages, rather than search or recommendations – strengthening the bond with traditional
brands.”

According to the deputy director of the project Amy Mitchell, there is plenty of opportunity in the “social and mobile realms,” for news media, however they need to improve their “understanding of audience behavior and developing effective technology and revenue models,” the AFP reported.
