Microsoft demonstrated for the very first time, Windows 8 at Consumer Electronics Show(CES) 2011 in Las Vegas on 5th January. Although this demonstration was all about its platform support, but still it seems exciting that it will run on System-on-a-Chip(SoC) architecture with ARM-based processors from NVIDIA, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments. And, Microsoft is not yet dropping the x86 architecture as they displayed the New version of Windows also running on Intel's x86 architecture SoC platform.

The most interesting thing to be noticed was neither Steve Ballmer(CEO, Microsoft) nor Steven Sinofsky(President, Windows and Windows Live) used the name "Windows 8" for it, instead they called it next version of Windows. So the point is, Haven't they decided the name for Windows 7's successor yet? Even "Windows 8" name is very much expected and almost fixed but still they created a suspense out of it.

With today’s announcement, we’re showing the flexibility and resiliency of Windows through the power of software and a commitment to world-class engineering. We continue to evolve Windows to deliver the functionality customers demand across the widest variety of hardware platforms and form factors,” Sinofsky said. He also mentioned they will extend Microsoft Office too to run natively on ARM it was also visible at the time when they demonstrated the capabilities of Windows platform on ARM architecture.

The announcement is just the start of our dialog with a broad community around Windows and, as with Windows 7, we will be engaging in the broadest pre-release program of any operating system. So there is a lot more to come,” He added further.
So the wait is on for the next public announcement about Windows 8, which can be expected later this year.
