Main Taskbar (Running Applications) has disappeared (Quicklaunch still visible) 

Quicklaunch, Language, and Windows Media toolbars are all visible; this applies only for my main User profile.

No matter what I enable or disable in the Taskbar, I cannot see Running Applications; the only way I can get there is using Taskmanager or ALT-TAB

If I create a new User profile the Running Applications re-appear, but to migrate my profile is a big task, worse than setting up a new computer

Has anyone encountered this problem?  Is there some registry fix for this?

Windows XP-Pro, SP2, fully updated

Seems like you are using a game whose requirements are bigger than the configuration of your OS. I actually don't know the real reason but try uninstalling the game if you had any or use SYSTEM RESTORE.
