Memory/ RAM issue in XP

I'm running XP professional w/ SP2.  I've got 4GB of RAM in my system, 2 2GB DDR2 667 single channel sticks.  I recently installed a XFX Geforce 8600GT.  The problem I'm having, is now the system is only reading 2.43GB of physical RAM and 2.05GB available.   If I remove either of the memory modules, the system reads 2.00GB of physical RAM, 1.65GB available.  It doesn't matter which module I remove, same results.  The system is reading the memory correctly when only one stick is installed, but the second I install both of them, the systems incorrectly reads the memory.  Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Anthony

Re: Memory/ RAM issue in XP

2 things:

XP does not show 4GB, however it will utilize the same during processing. (that's what I have read at a lot places.

Try this:

open up your boot.ini file in the root of your system drive.  At the end of the line for your XP installation, add "/PAE" without the quotes.  This enabled the physical address extensions which will allow you to use up to 4GB of memory (the upper limit in XP Pro).

Re: Memory/ RAM issue in XP

I know XP won't show the full 4gb, but it's not reading as much as it should even after disabling the onboard video.  What I'm trying to figure out is why it isn't showing as much physical RAM as it should.

Re: Memory/ RAM issue in XP

I got it up to 2.93GB of RAM by dropping the VGA aperture down to 32MB since I'm not using onboard video.  That's as high as I can get it.
