Virus problem in XP, need help

My aunt asked me to help fix her XP home computer because she got a virus that ate up her dll files and the machine was running very slowly.  She wanted to go ahead and upgrade the memory while she was at it, and didn't really have anything on the PC that couldn't be reinstalled at a later date, so I upgraded it to 1gb of RAM, reformatted the hard drive, and did a clean install of XP professional.  However, the machine is still running unbearably slowly, even after the low level format and clean OS install.  The OS installation itself took over 24 hours to complete, and the cpu is constantly running at 100%.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Anthony

Re: Virus problem in XP, need help

Since you said Windows installation itself took 24+ hours, its most probably a hardware problem. Either the Hard disk problem or RAM problem. Pls ask your hardware dealer to check the hardware.

Re: Virus problem in XP, need help

I thought that myself, but the hard drive and RAM were both tested in another machine and are functioning properly.  I ended up checking the bios and the processor was set to compatible mode.  I changed that to normal and it seems to be working fine now.  Thanks for the help.
