How To Stop Automatic Windows Update From Rebooting Your System!
Modified By Penryn on 8/31/2007 7:58:20 PM)
Hi all,

Before i start, i would like to mention that I DONOT TAKE ANY CREDITS for this find as i have found it by surfing online. However, please do feel free to rep me.....

As the topic says, HOW TO STOP AUTOMATIC WINDOWS UPDATE FROM REBOOTING YOUR SYSTEM, si all about tweaking windows xp in such a way that after receiving any critical windows update, the system doesnot restart automatically.

I will first explain the tweak for windows xp home:

Start / Run / regedit / HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ Windows \ WindowsUpdate \ AU

Create a DWORD value named
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers". Then set it to "1"

WARNING:
If this value is changed while the computer is in a restart pending state, it will not take effect until the next time an update requires a restart.

Now for windows xp pro:

XP Pro:
Start / Run / gpedit.msc / Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update / Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations

Set the value of the time in minutes until the next prompt. "1440" (24 hours)

WARNING:
If the status is set to Enabled, a scheduled restart will occur the specified number of minutes after the previous prompt for restart was postponed.

If the status is set to Disabled or Not Configured, the default interval is 10 minutes.

Note: This policy applies only when Automatic Updates is configured to perform scheduled installations of updates. If the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy is disabled, this policy has no effect.

This does not stop the warning message completely in XP Pro. It only delays it for up to 24 hours.

Now your computer should not reboot, but just notify you that a reboot is needed.

I hope this does work for u guys coz for me this was one of the best thing i have found and implemented and have tried ti with sucess after receiving the automatic updates for the month of december 2006.

Please use small images in signature as we also have dial-up users - HelpDesk
