Windows XP has many hidden functions that are not iconified in the program menu or in any other place. This article will unearth some of these XP functions.

On Screen Keyboard

Windows XP comes with an on screen keyboard which you could use instead of your actual keyboard.

  • Click on Start Button
  • Click on Run
  • Type in "osk" and hit enter

    Shadow Icons

Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance area > Settings button : Visual Effects tab "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the Desktop"

Adding icons to the start menu

Right click on the .exe file that you want to place it in the start menu and select 'Pin to Start Menu', the icon gets displayed on the start menu above the separator line. To remove it, right click on the icon and hit 'Unpin from Start Menu'.

    Rename a Series of Files

  • Open the folder where your files are present.
  • Highlight all the files using shift key or Ctrl key
  • Right click on any of the selected files and hit rename
  • Give a new name
  • All the files would be renamed in a sequence, this is best for pictures.

    Uninstalling the messenger

Start -> Run ->"gpedit.msc" -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Messenger
