What to do when something goes wrong after editing a file using resource hacker

Whenever we modify a file using resource hacker we finally save the file using the save button on the file menu. Then the windows file protection dialog appears,we click cancel followed by yes on the next message box asking whether we want to keep these unreconized versions. Finally we restart the system to see the changes.(I have not disabled the write protection service).
Do you know that anything can go wrong in these procedures. The same thing happened to me.I modified three files at a time namely explorer.exe,system32.dll,msgina.dll saved them and restart my system. But during login Windows failed to logon and displayed a critical message somthing dealing with explorer.exe, the system stoped there only .I tried to start windows in safe mode, last known good config but the same message appears. So what to do in these situation.
Whenever we modify such file windows automatically creates a backup of these file with name filename_original.extension where filename is the filename of the modified file in the working directory upon restarting windows.During saving such files need to be deleted before the modified one can be saved. These files can thus be used to undo the changes. The next question is how to restore changes. In such cases window will start in "safe mode with command prompt".So start Windows in "safe mode with command prompt" by pressing F8 during startup. The command prompt will be shown and logging in.

Go to the desired directory using -cd C:\windows
delete the file explorer.exe using -del explorer.exe
rename the backup file using -ren explorer_original.exe explorer.exe
Similarly other files can also be restored if needed.
Now type shutdown/r-a system shut down message will be displayed
exit command prompt.

The system will restart automatically by the above command.
That's it.

Note:If windows fails to start in "safe mode with command prompt" then boot from windows XP CD and repair the command prompt will appear there do the same as mentioned above. Here you don't need to give the shutdown command as typing exit will automatically restart your system.

One last suggestion do not try to modify such files simultaneously.

^^ Thats strange. I have never received any problem report from any one even I have not faced any problem to date. You must have some mistakes while editing the file and it got corrupted. Thats why Windows showed error and was not able to start.

btw, you can repair Windows anytime if you face a problem.

Hi there Vishal

I just want to first thank you for this wonderful website and to all the other people who contributed etc.

I am new to the site but have been looking at some of the hacks on here and many are very useful .

But I want to ask you a question about the patch thats needed for xp, I downloaded it and tried to install it

but I got a error message about compatibility ,

My first question is that because I have SP3 on my system?? and secondly if i take that off will the hacks work.and go back to SP2.

At the moment I have my pc going like a rocket because some of the hacks I incorporated from you guys, but I would like

to do some visual effects also but I am not sure of the best approach .
