Vista 64 bit Versions Availability and Choice.
Modified By Andy on 4/23/2007 11:56:24 AM)
Hi,

This is my first post here So please forgive my mistakes, if any.

I have two questions:

1.  Is there any difference in Vista Business Edition OEM Version and Retail Version apart from the support policy?  I understand one does not get any free support for OEM version whereas there is 90 days free support for retial version.  If there is no difference other than support policy, does it make sense to go for an OEM version? OEM version is much cheaper than retail version.  I have assembled a PC for my office and need to buy an OS for that.  I have been using Vista Beta 2, Build 5384 on this machine, but it will expire on May 31, 2007.

2.  If I buy 32 bit OEM version of Vista Business Edition, will I be able to order 64 bit media?  Availability of 64 bit OEM versions of Business Edition seems to be a problem.  I could not find it anywhere in Pune.  Also, the sellers were unable to comment when it would be available.

Please advise.

Thanks.
Anand Gham.

Re: Vista 64 bit Versions Availability and Choice.
OEM generally means "original equipment manufacturer."
The main difference between OEM and retail version is that the OEM is supplied to the system builders so you wont get it in the market if you assembled the PC.It only comes preinstalled and you cannot buy it from the market. The main thing is that the OEM version only works with a single PC and if it crashes than you have to buy a new one and Windows Vista retail can be installed on multiple PC's but then U have to uninstall from the previous one.Windows Vista Retail is everything, packaging, cd, manuals, warranty, tech suport etc. OEM is just the disk, no thrills.

And pl. note :
"If you are currently running a 32-bit version of Windows, you can only perform an upgrade to another 32-bit version of Windows. Similarly, if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you can only perform an upgrade to another 64-bit version of Windows Vista."

Also see the links given in that :

Installation choices for consumer versions of Windows Vista (32-bit only)

Installation choices for 64-bit consumer versions of Windows Vistawhich says: "if you are running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista and want to install a 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you must use one of the following methods:

Purchase a full version of the 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

Remove the 32-bit version of Windows Vista, install Windows XP, and then install the 64-bit version of Windows Vista by using an installation method that is listed earlier in this article."
